So Delicious Cherry Amaretto Coconut Milk Ice Cream: Dairy Free Deliciousness in Moderation
Milk alternatives, while once banished to the dark depths of health food stores they have broken out into the mainstream in recent years, giving the lactose intolerant something more tolerable to put in their cereal.
Personally I find most of these milk substitutes taste awful. I try to lie to myself, and say that I'll get used to the taste, but I know better.
Then one day I stumbled upon coconut milk.
Yes, coconut milk: that weird dairy-free, non-soy, milk substitute that a small fraction of people use to supplement their craving for milky things. It's right up there with almond milk, rice milk, and any other unexpected food that you can apparently make milk from.
I tried the "So Delicious" coconut milk (Seriously, that's the name of the company). Well actually I tried their coconut milk in ice cream form, which I'm always going to favor over the unsweetened liquid form.
Did I mention I've got a sweet tooth?
So Delicious strives to make healthier milk alternatives that actually taste good. I like tasty things! I can dig it!
Let's see how their Coconut Milk Cherry Amaretto Ice Cream stacks up nutritionally to a serious competitor: Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia Frozen Yogurt, because the last thing I need is excess fat and diabetes.

So Delicious's Cherry Amaretto tackles Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia Froyo in most categories; in the areas where the froyo came out on top it was a marginal win.
So Delicious wins out for people looking to control their intake of calories, cholesterol, carbohydrates, or sugar. It's also a definite winner in people who need more fiber in their diet.
Get to the important part! How about the taste?
If you're digging into this expecting the creamy goodness that is the ice cream that people know and love then you're going to be sorely disappointed.
This does not taste at all like ice cream.
Thankfully it also doesn't taste like something you're digging out the back of the diet section freezer in a health food store.
There is a definite coconut milk taste here which makes sense since it's made from the stuff, but it's good.
It's really good!
So good it's almost addictive!
Did you ever see the movie called "The Stuff"? It's like that except... wait that's a terrible comparison, since So Delicious's Coconut Milk Ice Cream is not sourced from a hole in the ground at a chemical plant and does not turn you into a ice cream spewing monster.
But anyway... it's a healthier dessert than your standard frozen treat and actually tastes great.
However, and I cannot stress this enough, please please PLEASE DON'T eat the whole container in one sitting.
I know that you may enjoy tearing off the lid and curling up on the couch armed with a spoon and your little half-pint container
I am a bit more sophisticated, as I scoop the entire container into a large bowl instead of eating directly from the carton. It is important that we have the right dinnerware when eating our non-dairy milk substitute ice cream dessert, otherwise we are no better than savages.
But anyway, if you do eat the whole container in one sitting YOU WILL BE SORRY!
This ice cream has 7 grams of fiber per serving. In that half-pint there are 4 servings, giving you a whopping 28 grams of fiber in that little container that your digestive system has to deal with. That's more fiber than a lot of Americans get all week!
When I first tried this product, on a whim at the advice of a friend, I didn't check the label first and I made the terrible mistake of eating the whole container at once.
I encountered such abdominal duress the likes of which I had never felt before. Terrible turmoil tortured my intestines with a furious force like the thunder of the gods (believe me, when you're stuck on the toilet doubled over in pain you'll think of some creative means of expressing yourself as well).
This intolerable temptress had scarred me deeply to the soul. I vowed to never again sample her decadent delights.
Of course I am also a forgetful boy, so when I was wandering around Whole Foods several months later I plopped the half-pint into my basket with nary a second thought; maybe I just managed to block out the horrible memory of my abdominal distention. Of course now that I've remembered the horrific consequences I question as to why I willingly bought more of this creamy intestinal chaos in a carton.
What's the verdict?
I know after that scathing and graphic depiction of what happened on my first sampling of this product you're probably wondering why I'm still giving it five stars.
Well I can't really fault the product for my own failure to read the label. And knowing now about the high amount of fiber in each serving ensures I'm going to keep my portions small.
This is why I say...
A delicious dessert, as long as you take it in moderation. Always in moderation.
